Date Posted: 1999-07-24

Okinawa Prefectural Police released Monday the results of the Summer Safe Driving Campaign, held from July 8 - 17. During the six-week-long safe driving campaign, police beefed up patrols throughout the prefecture in order to make motorists more aware of safety regulations, the wearing of seat belts and the use of child restraints.

According to the report, there were 115 traffic accidents during the blitz, 12 less than last year. There were four fatalities, two more than for the same period last year, four injured and 120 slight injuries.

Of concern was the large number of motorists convicted of traffic offenses. The reports shows 1,326 drivers were booked, including one case of driving without a license, one drunk driving conviction, and one incident of excessive speeding. Illegal parking accounted for 752 infringements.
