10 swimmers stung by jelly fish

Date Posted: 1999-07-24

Ten children were stung by jelly fish early Sunday morning as they swam at Sunset Beach, one of Chatanís most popular swimming areas. After the incident, personnel decided to close the beach to all swimmers at 9:50 a.m. Included among the jelly fish caught were two habu jelly fish.

The children were treated by staff at the beach, who applied vinegar to the stings. The stingings came as a surprise to Sunset Beach management who said netting at the beach should have blocked the jelly fish.

Meanwhile, Okinawa Prefectural officials have urged swimmers to take added precautions when swimming in areas where there is a greater risk of being attacked by jelly fish or other dangerous creatures..
