Fourth of July Party at the U.S. Consulate successBy: Marie W. Conway Date Posted: 1999-07-24  On July 2nd, over 350 guests consisting of the military and local community came together to toast America¹s 223rd birthday celebration at the U.S. Consulate, Okinawa. In his speech, Consul General Robert Luke said the Americans are proud to call Okinawa their "home." He also expressed hope that the U.S. and Okinawa will work together to host next year’s G-8 Summit. Continuing in the spirit of cooperation Mrs. Takako Kishimoto, wife of the Mayor of Nago City, announced that she has formed a committee whose goal is to invite Mrs. Hillary Clinton to visit the island during the summit. After Consul General Luke’s speech and the cake cutting ceremony, extraordinary performances were given by America¹s Maria Howell who sang the American national anthem and Okinawan opera singer Mieko Hokama who sang the Japanese national anthem. Other talented performers included Byron Jones who played traditional Okinawan music on the shamisen, the USMC III MEF Band, and 10 teenage vocalists from Rising Stars. MCCS and sponsors from the local business community contributed food and beverages to make this party an event to remember. |
