Source of clam killing pollution remains mystery

Date Posted: 2003-06-01

The mystery of dead clams at a cultivation site off Kitamae continues to trouble investigators, who cannot determine the source of the pollution that is affecting the fishery farm and has killed all clams there.

According to officials at the Okinawa Prefecture Land Development Bureau that is investigating the site, all clams in the farm are covered with dirty mulch and are dead. Most of them also have holes in their shells. Investigators say that the clams were also covered with a special film designed to protect them, and the films are also broken.

Representatives from the Chatan Fishermen's Association also found that 32 of the chains that connect buoys on the surface to weights on the bottom, and from which the clam colonies are suspended were broken and lying on the bottom.
