One year to go to Okinawa Summit

Date Posted: 1999-07-24

Preparations for the year 2000 G8 summit, scheduled to be held in Okinawa from July 21 through 23 next year are in full swing at Busena Resort, the site of the summit, and local communities hoping to utilize the event to the fullest extent. The summit has been held in Japan three times. The Okinawa summit will be the first time Japan is hosting the event outside Tokyo.

Local municipalities have pinned high hopes to the event. According to polls, over 80 percent of the prefecture’s residents think that the summit will have a positive impact on the prefecture. Most municipalities are busy making plans to attract the participating leaders and their spouses to pay a visit. U.S. President Bill Clinton and the First Lady Hillary seem to be on everyone’s wish list. Okinawa City Mayor has already announced his intention to name a public square after Clinton. He also wishes the president to give a speech somewhere in the city. Kadena Town Mayor hopes that the president’s plane will land at Kadena Air Base, and that the president will speak to his townspeople.

Itoman City Mayor wishes all eight leaders to come to the Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni, Itoman City, and attend a peace ceremony there.
