Police finally catch Ishigaki bag thief

A man has been arrested over his involvement in the theft of a tourist’s bag from a hotel in Ishigaki in December 1998. According to a police report, Mitsuharu Kawamitsu, 35, an Ishigaki native, will be charged over the theft at the hotel, believed to be the same hotel where a number of other thefts have occurred.

Police said the tourist, from Hyogo Prefecture, had the bag stolen sometime between 8:45 p.m. on December 27 and 8:30 a.m. the following morning when the victim was absent from her room. The suspect allegedly stole ¥80,000 from a wallet and several other items valued at more than ¥30,000. Extensive Ishigaki Police investigations identified Kawamitsu as the chief suspect.
