Carps in Naha City Civil Hall pond die mysteriously

Date Posted: 2003-06-01

Most of the 300 carps that inhabited the man-made pond at Naha City Civil Hall mysteriously died suddenly last week. According to Naha City spokesman, a guard on duty discovered the fish floating on the pond as he inspected the premises. The guard immediately called police, who arrived to investigate.

City officials say there were 300 carps in the pond, but only 50 are still alive. He estimated the value of the loss at 350,000. All fish in the pond were about 25 cm long weighing between 2.2 and 4.4 pounds each.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the death of the fish. Experts say that it could be a natural infection, or someone could have poisoned the pond. The police do not rule out either cause.
