Date Posted: 1999-09-25

A woman who allegedly told an acquaintance she needed money to help a friend in financial difficulty was arrested Monday by Naha City Police. According to police, Miyuki Murayama, 41, is also under investigation over another incident police said might lead to other charges being laid.

Police said on May 8, 1998, Murayama told the victim a friend was in urgent need of some cash and as she was short of money asked if she could help. The suspect allegedly told the woman she would be able to help pay back the money as she claimed her uncle owned a large company and would assist in making the repayment. Police said Murayama used this ruse on a number of occasions to secure ¥1.3 million from the victim. When the victim became suspicious of the woman’s motives, she notified police.
