Night patrol teams start in Urasoe City

Date Posted: 1999-07-17

Urasoe City officials and educators held the inauguration ceremony for the city’s Night Patrol Team, July 7. The purpose of the team is to control reckless driving and loitering by young people and school children in the city during the upcoming school summer recess. The team consists of members of Urasoe City Police, and local educators.

The decision to form the group was made a month earlier in a meeting between the participants who were concerned about the large number of school children who had run into trouble with the police. The number has been averaging about 250 per month.

65 retired police officers, 27 juvenile guides and 7 advisors form the members of the teams. They patrol around their town in order to regulate children’s night loitering, motorcycle gangs, and the young people who gather to see reckless driving of local motorcycle gangs. The reason the teams decided to prevent people from gathering to watch reckless driving is that the spectators encourage those who participate in such driving to show off. They reason that if the spectators disappear, the number of those juveniles who join the gangs will decrease also.
