Gangster arrested for punching pedestrian on face

Date Posted: 2003-06-01

Naha Police arrested a 36-year-old reputed member of the Gyokuryu-kai underworld syndicate Monday on suspicion of an assault resulting in bodily injury.

According to police investigators, a man who had been walking on Kokusai Street in Naha City accidentally bumped into the gangster. Such encounters between pedestrians are common on Naha City's most crowded street and usually cause nothing more than a muttering of "Oh, excuse me" from both sides.

Katsuya Shiroma, however, would have nothing of the sort. He reportedly took the unlucky fellow pedestrian by coat lapels and started screaming at him, "Who do you think I am. I'm not an ordinary man walking on the street. I will show you." He then proceeded to punch the man on the face and gave him a bloody nose.

As soon as the gangster left, the victim called the police who arrived promptly. The victim was then able to point the police to his assailant. He was arrested on the spot.
