Skate boarding, BMX, live DJ, street dance performances, flea markets. If one of those above draws your attention, it's worth to come out to the Park Avenue on July 24(Sat) and 25(Sun).

The Okinawa City Shopping District Promotion Association will be hosting an event called "Action 1, Eddy" as the first of their several up-coming events designed to activate and promote the Park Avenue area in Okinawa City.

At the event, the young adults oriented attractions will take place at the rooftop floor of the "Korinza" shopping center for two days. On the 24th, the Skate Board Park, the first skate board park inside a shopping center not only in Okinawa but also in Japan, will open to the public after the opening ceremony at 12:00 p.m.

The facility contains six wooden skate boarding ramps and equipment for BMX. Seven more ramps will be added to total of 13 in the future. According to the Okinawa City Shopping District Promotion Association, there are approximately one thousand skate boarders in Okinawa. However, problems with noise usually put limits to the times and places for practice so, the opening of the park will be good news to many skate boarders. The park will be open open from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and after that from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. The park is open for all skaters and BMXers for free, however, there are rules that must be followed and all behavior that endangers public safety is prohibited.

To add to the festive mood of the event, live DJ and a street dance performance will be presented from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the park.

During the two days of the event, the Park Avenue promenade will be vehicle-free and over 100 flea market booths will line the shopping promenade from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be many other attractions for children in the Park Avenue area, including a road painting event for children that begins at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

A free calligraphy class will be offered on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and anyone, from children to adults, who's interested is welcome. Those who want to join the class are asked to assemble in front of the "America-ya" stationary and clothing shop at 2:00 p.m. and bting a towel with them. Casual dress is recommended because working with a brush and black ink can be a messy affair for the untrained.

The Philippines' bamboo dance demonstration and lesson (6:00 - 7:00 p.m. ) and Japanese tea ceremony lesson (4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) are also scheduled for free on Sunday.

For two days, the photo exhibit titled "the Manhole Children" will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at vacant shops along the Park Avenue.

To share "Champuru", means "mixed" in Okinawan dialect, Spirit of Okinawa City, the association welcomes everyone to the event.

"We see this event as a good opportunity to provide the community a two-way cultural exchange. We welcome everyone and want to draw everyone into the event." Shinichiro Ikehara, an official at the event headquarters explained.

The Okinawa City Shopping District Promotion Association is also willing to support performers who are looking for opportunities to perform by providing a place to express their talent.

This event will be just the beginning for Okinawa City to bring people back to the Park Avenue area to regain some of its hustle and bustle of its heyday. The next attraction will be the Flea Market, with scheduled 108 vendor booths that will take place on August 28 and 29.

Organizers of the events say that there are still some booths for the flea market on July 24 & 25 and also on August 28 (Sat) & 29 (Sun). Anyone wishing to get a booth at the flea market as a vendor, should call A.I.L. Corporation at 957-3111 or fax at 956-9455 (Ask for Mabel).
