School Bus Registration for SY99-00

Date Posted: 1999-07-17

School may be over, but the Okinawa School Bus Office, sometimes called the Bus Barn, is still open for business. Parents are encouraged to take the time and register their children for the bus now to avoid the long lines common in August. The District Transportation Supervisor Bruce Brinn stated there are over 3,500 bus riders in a normal year and next year there will be more with the additional Sure Start program. He stated that the SBO has been registering students for the new school year since April with about 1,750 being registered so far.

His advice to all parents is not to wait until August to register. The line and waiting time get very long and it is hot. To re-register your children takes about 10 minutes. To register for the first time may take 15 to 20 minutes. To register a copy of the student registration (SD Form 600), the student, and if you are a first time registrant, a copy of your lease and map if you live off-base or housing assignment letter for those who live on-base is necessary. If the sponsor is not present, an individual acting on behalf of the sponsor must have a power of attorney to sign up for Bus Monitor duties with the 18th Support Group, co-located with the SBO. The School Bus Office is located in building T-2518 on Camp Lester. Our hours are Monday through Friday, 0730 to 1630. If you have questions concerning Bus Monitor program or Lunch Program, call the 18th Support Group at 645-2431/2360. For questions on bus pass, commuting zones and busing call the School Bus Office at 645-2036/7820
