First robbery case on record shocks Ogimi Village

Date Posted: 2003-06-01

Residents of the tiny village of Ogimi in northern Okinawa, usually the epitome of serenity and peace where the quiet days are enhanced by birds singing in the surrounding forests, got the shock of their lives Sunday when someone entered the village's only supermarket and robbed the cash register at knifepoint.

Nago Police report that a man who had covered his face with a towel and wore dark sun glasses entered the store shortly after it opened at 7 a.m. The robber had a knife in his hand, pointed it towards the cashier and demanded the contents of the register. "If you don't hand over the money, I will kill you," the robber reportedly said.

The frightened clerk opened the register and handed over its contents - 10,000 in small bank notes. The robber ran away.

The cashier called Nago police, but she was reportedly too scared to remember almost anything about the robber, except that he was about 170 cm tall and slightly built. "I was so scared that I barely could look at him. I just handed over the money," the clerk told the investigators.
