Two dependents arrested for using fake money

Date Posted: 2003-06-01

Okinawa City Police arrested two American teenagers Monday for using fake $50 bills to purchase candy at a shop on a Chuo Park Avenue store.

The two boys, ages 15 and 16, are both military dependents from Kadena Air Base. They were apprehended on Saturday, some three hours after they both had purchased candy worth 160 each. Both had received $48.40 change from the store.

The store clerk, who says she had never held a $50 banknote before, became suspicious upon examining the bills more closely and noticing that one of them was split in two at the corner. She pulled the sides apart and realized that the bill was made of copies of the both sides of a real $50 bill. She then called the police.

The police determined that both bills were made same way. The clerk then accompanied the police in a patrol car on a search for the boys. They finally spotted the culprits near the Chuo Park area. The boys reportedly told police when questioned that they were surprised the clerk had noticed so soon that the bills were fake.
