Police, citizens step-up patrols on Highway 58

Date Posted: 1999-09-10

Prefectural police, members from local PTAs and school administrators conducted a late-night patrol along Highway 58 last Sunday and Monday as part of a combined effort to combat reckless driving and speeding along what is perhaps the prefecture’s most notorious late-night strip.

From midnight August 29 until 4 a.m. the following morning, the group concentrated on Okinawa’s most frequented highway in order to minimize traffic incidents and put a halt to motorcycle gangs using the highway as their own private drag strip.

Combined with a team of 11 officers from the Urasoe City Police department and 15 officers from the traffic control division of the Okinawa Prefectural Police, the patrols hoped their attendance would result in a marked decrease in the number of infringements handed out along the highway in future.
