Conference held to address late night youth problem

Date Posted: 1999-09-10

A conference held to find a possible solution to an increasing number of youths from staying out late at night was held Monday at the Okinawa Convention Center in Shimashi, Ginowan City.

Under the auspices of the Prefectural Citizens’ Prevention of Youth Nighttime Loitering committee, slogans such as “Keep Cinderella Time,” a fairy tale reference intended to ensure youths are home by midnight, and “Change the minor_s behavior by setting examples for them as adults_ were discussed.

Currently, the prefecture is experiencing a marked increase in the number of youths staying out late at night, which many analysts blame on some aspects of the Okinawan lifestyle, such as fathers arriving home late

At the conference, participants discussed methods in which to prevent youths loitering around major entertainment areas, and concluded that families, schools and the police should cooperate to help prevent what is becoming a major concern for the prefecture.

Among the many organizations who sponsored the event were the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Prefectural Board of Education, Prefectural Police, Prefectural Youth Raising Committee and Prefectural High School and the PTA.
