Coral Cove gets a face lift thanks to volunteers

Sailing vessels, turquoise waters, and sandy beaches - the perfect backdrop for an island bar where anyone can wonder in and share a tall tale of adventure over a tropical drink. You would think that Okinawa is the perfect setting for such a place with its splendid coastline and warm ocean breezes, but if you have lived here for a while, then you probably already noticed that there are very few "true" island-style bars that fit the descriptions of your imagination. But, there is one place that stands out when it comes to kickin back and enjoying the sunset - I'm talking about the Coral Cove on Torii Station, and it's now even better than ever.

Celebrating a complete renovation, the Coral Cove held a grand opening party at the end of last month. Colonel Robert J. McNeil, 10th ASG Commander, was on hand for a tape cutting ceremony, which was followed by some free food for everyone. The get-together helped to inaugurate the culmination of work done by many dedicated volunteers who all pitched in a hand to help put the Coral Cove into shape.

Manager George "Scoop" DeGrella explained that the job was done through "team work against all odds" after an unfortunate cancellation by the original contractor occurred. "We had already pulled everything out in preparation, so when we heard about the cancellation we held an emergency meeting and asked ourselves ' OK can we do this?'"

Scoop and other members of Torii Station pooled together their talents and completed the renovation on time. "We had a lot of help from Public Works, the Scuba Locker, Torii management, the Coral Cove staff, and many more people. Everyone gave whatever they could," explained Scoop.

Guests at the Coral Cove will quickly notice its new "beach" theme, complete with bamboo decorated walls and thatch hanging from up above. Located high on a hill with huge glass windows overlooking the ocean, the Coral Cove enables you to relax at the bar or grab a table with friends as you watch the sun set over the East China Sea. You can even sit outside on the verandah and grab a bite to eat with a cold beer. Other sea ornaments due to arrive shortly will add to the atmosphere, and patrons can expect friendly service.

Fitting in with its beach atmosphere, Coral Cove's drink menu consists of plenty of tropical cocktails. Delicious frozen Daiquiris, Margaritas, and Pina Coladas will cool your summer thirst for about $2.75, or you can go for the Coral Cove famous 1/2 Yard Thirstbuster, which is served in a big and tall, weird kind of glass for $9 (only $6 for refills). Everything from "Singapore Slings" to "Sex On The Beach" can be ordered, and there is a good selection of beers available, ranging in price from $1 to $2.50. There's also O'douls nonalcaholic beer and soft drinks for all non-drinkers.

Drinks are not the only thing on the menu though; there are plenty of meals to choose from if you get hungry. Definitely feel free to cruise on over for lunch and enjoy one of Coral Cove's delicious cold sandwiches, burgers, or wraps. There are also plenty of other food items, including some good side orders. Meals are served from 11 am until 10 pm.

Manager Scoop also mentioned that customers can now enjoy live music on certain nights. "We have some good bands play like Chuck Wow and David Ralston. We've moved the pool table to a more convenient spot, so now there is room to dance in front of the new stage area," he said.

Torii's Coral Cove also can cater parties. For more information, call Scoop at 644-4256 or 644-4894. Definitely check out the new and improved Coral Cove for your next lunch or after work gathering.
