Veteran country singer only just warming up

It’s Thursday, the eve of what is arguably the biggest event featured on Okinawa. For the past few years, Americans as well as Japanese spectators have flocked to the annual American Festival held on Kadena Air Base. This year will undoubtedly be no exception. The three-day festival held from July 2-4, from noon-11 p.m., has for many become an annual ritual, evoking friendship and cultural exchange between Americans and local nationals.

As they have done so well before, popular U.S. and prominent local recording artists will help bridge cultural differences when they take center stage and perform to big audiences at the American Festival. In addition to the anticipated huge turnout, the event will feature some of the island’s tastiest foods, fireworks, games, and fun for the whole family.

After the success of last year’s featured R&B group and Crave recording artists’ Allure, this year promises even more. With the ever-increasing popularity in country music, thanks in part to artists like Garth Brooks and LeAnn Rimes among others, its not surprising that this year’s featured artist at the American Festival is a country singer.

Texas native and River North recording artist Holly Dunn will electrify audiences when she and her band perform live July 3, from 6 p.m. and July 4, at 7:45 p.m. With hit songs like “That’s What Your Love Does To Me,” “Strangers Again,” “Daddy’s Hands,” and the Number One country smash-hit “You Really Had Me Going,” the concert promises to delight Dunn fans and turn country music naysayers into supporters. The singer will also sign autographs at Kadena’s BX July 2, from noon to 1 p.m.

Prior to pursuing a recording career, Dunn, along with her brother Chris Waters Dunn, began as songwriters for some of country music’s future stars and legendary singers. The brother and sister duo have written songs for country singers Christy Lane, Terri Gibbs and Marie Osmond, to name a few. After experiencing success as a songwriter, Dunn embarked upon shopping her demo in search of a recording contract. Finding success briefly at MTM records, before ultimately taking up a more permanent residence at Warner Brother Records, Dunn was about to make the world know her name.

As an artist recording under the Warner Brother banner, Dunn released several CDs, including her final critically acclaimed disc for the label “Getting It Dunn” in ‘92. The CD enjoyed modest success and a loyal fan base; though never reaching the gold and platinum status record label executives have long associated with success. Platinum plaque accolades or not, Dunn compiled her biggest hits and the controversial “Maybe I Mean Yes” onto her collection of greatest hits CD, appropriately titled “Milestones.”

Have no doubt as to how you will feel when you put this disc in your CD player and press play - spellbound and elated. The soothing alto singer provides enough energy to make the most rhythmless dancer begin two-steppin’ flawlessly to tracks like “There Goes My Heart Again.” Then without blinking an eye, turn around and leave you breathlessly hoping to be taken far away like Calgon, as exemplified on tracks like “No One Takes The Train Anymore.”

Dunn’s latest offering “Life And Love And All The Stages,” released on the River North record label, finds the veteran singer delivering her usual traditional style of country music with a warm contemporary undertone. The singer maintains a musical consistency and a loyal fan base that has supported her over the last decade. And although Dunn may have reached a “milestone,” it’s evident this singer/songwriter has only just begun.
