City assembly officially announce Naha’s ‘new town’

Date Posted: 1999-07-03

Land once used as a U.S. military housing site but since converted into a new development center has been officially given a new name, the Naha City assembly announced Tuesday. The area is to be known as “Omoromachi Sanchome.”

The final decision was not without controversy, with members evenly divided over two names: “Omoromachi Sanchome” and “Mekaru Ichome”. When debate over the name lasted for more than three hours and a clear winner could not be decided, the assembly chairman was called upon to cast the deciding vote.

The new area now under construction will eventually house a new Naha City Hall, schools, hospitals, hotels, shopping malls, a theater and an amusement park in addition to residential areas. It will eventually be the new city center of Naha area.

“Omoromachi Sanchome” is best translated into English as “The Big Fun Town of Three Blocks.”
