Okinawan Economy in Recovery

Date Posted: 1999-07-03

Meanwhile, the Okinawan economy is one of only two regions throughout the country to show an upward trend and enjoy a recovery, the Economic Planning Agency’s June report shows.

The monthly economic report, according to the Nikkei, Japan’s most prestigious financial newspaper, showed the Okinawan economy to be the “first region to bottom out and begin to grow.” The EPA, said the Nikkei, even went so far as to use the term “recovery” in its report, a fact likely not to be missed by the nearly 9 percent of Okinawans presently out of work.

Much of the optimism aired in the EPA report was generated by the prefecture’s booming tourism industry, which showed a record number of inbound travelers in March and April this year.

“Sentiment has improved considerably thanks to among other factors the decision to hold the summit of industrialized economies for 2000 in the prefecture,” the Nikkei said.
