Nago City residents air concerns over G-8 summit environmental impact

Date Posted: 1999-07-03

Residents’ groups have expressed concerns to Nago City officials and the Nago City Assembly about what they view as excessive development of areas surrounding the Busena Resort, venue for the 2000 Group of Eight economic summit.

Residents in Kise, Kouki and Kyoda are petitioning the city to make an official assessment of the environmental impact development at Busena will create. Based on the assessment, they intend to solicit an agreement from officials to limit development.

Residents said builders constructing pensions and other buildings in the area are doing so in order to cash in on the expected influx of visitors to Nago next July, and are doing so will little regard to the local environment. The construction is also ruining views from their properties, is destroying plant life and has created noise pollution problems, residents said.

The residents said the beachfront area is already under strain, with facilities for housing the construction company employees and offices already spreading and many more waiting to be erected.

The residents’ groups cite damage caused to Motobu Town where excessive construction of hotels and other buildings built for the 1975 Okinawa Ocean Expo were left vacant once the Expo ended. They fear a similar situation will occur in Nago.
