Eisa Dance Festival draws close

Date Posted: 1999-06-26

Attention all those interested in the Okinawa City International Association (OCIA)! Together with the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa City, the OCIA, as it does annually, is arranging an Eisa dancing group to perform at the All-Okinawa Eisa Festival, to be held at the Okinawa City Baseball Park in late August, early September.

Eisa dance is unique to Okinawa, and is traditionally performed by groups of young men, although women have become more interested in this form of dance.

Held in conjunction with the highly popular Orion Beer Festival also held in Okinawa City, where upwards of 100,000 people attend, the Eisa Festival is one of the most sought after events on the Okinawan calendar.

For those who intend to join in again this year, dance practice, where both boys and girls can participate, will be held on Friday June 25 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Ryokuju-En. From next week, practices will be conducted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

This year’s Eisa Festival is scheduled for August 29, and as a bonus one group may be selected to perform live on national TV (NHK TV). For more information, call Peter at 933-3902, or cell phone 090-3190-8173.
