Irei-no-hi ceremony held in Okinawa

Date Posted: 1999-06-26

Wednesday marked the 54th Irei-no-hi; a day set-aside in Okinawa for people to pray for souls of those who died in the war.

Memorial services were held at several locations to pray for the souls of the victims of the Battle of Okinawa to rest in peace. The Okinawa Prefecture held the 42nd memorial service for the war victims at the Keystone of the Peace monument at Mabuni, Itoman City. The stone monument has the names of all the victims that have been identified engraved on it regardless of their nationality.

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine stated in his comment for Ire-no-hi that he hopes that having this day commemorated in Okinawa will encourage young people of Okinawa to think about the tragedy of the war, the reasons why the battle of Okinawa took place, and not only praying for the soul of victims in Okinawa.
