Marine accused of attempted rape freed on bail Friday

Date Posted: 2003-05-24

The Naha District Court granted bail this week to U.S. Marine Corps Major Michael Brown, accused of attempting to rape a Filipino woman in November last year. This was the fourth request for bail for Brown. In requesting the bail, Brown's lawyer Toshimitsu Takaesu argued that the woman involved has forgiven Brown for the incident. Subsequently, Brown was released on bail of 10 million. Under the terms of the bail agreement, Brown will be under surveillance if he moves off base, but will likely be able to move around freely.

At his trial, which began in March, Brown admitted being with the woman early on Nov. 2, 2002, when the incident allegedly took place, but has denied all charges against him. His lawyer is demanding that the case be dismissed. The woman testified in the court that she never wanted to press the charges but Japanese police and prosecutors pressured her into pursuing the case.
