Police nab bottle-throwing US Marine

A U.S. Marine has been charged with malicious damage after he allegedly smashed a car windscreen with a bottle of beer June 1. Police said Kenneth G. Aldredge, 20, was questioned by a policeman on patrol immediately following the incident in Isa, Ginowan City and charged later that day.

Accomplice in 40,000,000 extortion case arrested

The husband of a woman who allegedly swindled more than 40,000,000 from businessmen has been arrested for his role in the extortion. Police said Akira Inoue, 58, was placed into custody May 31, following the arrest of his wife, 69-year-old Kiyoko Inoue on April 20. According to police, two extortion attempts were made, the first in February 1998 when Mrs. Inoue convinced a company executive to hand over 30,000,000. The second attempt involved both the husband and wife, who extorted 10,000,000 from the chairman of a medical institution in December last year. Following the arrest of Mrs. Inoue, police suspected there was more than one person behind the stings, and did not release any information, fearing her accomplices may flee if news was made public.

Drinking bout leads to knife attack

A construction worker was lucky to escape serious injury Saturday when he was attacked by a sickle-wielding friend during a drinking bout Saturday. The 47-year-old man was drinking alcohol in the house of the suspect, Kiyoshi Oshiro, 56, when a quarrel began, police said. Oshiro, a resident of Oshiro, Ozato Village, left the room and returned with a sickle, then proceeded to slash his friend about the neck and face. Fortunately, the victim received only minor injuries but will 10 days to recover from the cuts. Police were alerted to the incident after the victim went to hospital for treatment.

Elderly man missing, believed drowned

An elderly man is missing and believed drowned after he attempted to retrieve a fishing rod in the ocean off Yomitan Village Monday. At about 8 a.m., the man dropped his fishing rod into the water, then removed his clothes and waded in. Two elderly fisherman who witnessed the incident said they saw the man enter the water, collect his rod then attempt to return to shore, but as he approached he got into difficulty and disappeared underwater. The man is believed to be about 70 years old. The 11th Maritime Safety Agency and police are searching for the body.

Purse snatching on the rise

The number of purse snatching incidents in central Okinawa are on the rise, according to the Prefectural Police Public Relations Office. Police said 12 cases were reported June 2 in Urasoe, Naha, Okinawa and Gushikawa cities. The following day, a further three cases were reported in Naha and Urasoe cities and Yonabaru Village. Prefectural Police have requested the public to be aware of these incidents.

Police collar bank robber

An attempted bank robbery came unstuck Tuesday, when the would-be bank robber picked the wrong bank to rob. At about 10:20 a.m., a 31-year-old man from Shuri, Naha City, threatened a bank teller at the Bank of the Ryukyus branch in Naha City with a knife and demanded money. As the suspect waved the knife at the teller, a male bank clerk grabbed him, threw him to the ground and restrained him until Naha City police arrived on the scene. Police are investigating.
