Gangster boss arrested

Date Posted: 2003-05-24

Ginowan and Prefectural police teamed up this week to bust a gang leader believed in violation of prostitution laws. Ginowan City Police, together with the Okinawa Prefectural Police, arrested Okinawa Gyoku-Ryu Kai gangster group boss Hakobu Sakumoto, Monday, on suspicion of violating the anti-prostitution law. Five other members of the group were also arrested in connection with the same case.

According to investigators, the gangsters had used three Ginowan snack bars as their bases of operations from where they dispatched girls to customers. They reportedly netted more than 200 million over the seven months. The girls reportedly charged between 5,000 and 20,000 per customer, of which the gangsters took a 40 percent cut. They also arranged rooms for rent. Police also reported the case to tax officials, as the gangsters had not reported the income from their racket.
