International Workshops July 10th & 17th

Date Posted: 1999-06-11

Each year Okinawa City holds international workshops aimed at bringing the native population

together with foreign residents living in Okinawa City. The workshops are held to promote

friendship and understanding of the different cultures that we are lucky to have within this

cosmopolitan city.

Over the years we have held many workshops including introductions to different food, music

and many traditional arts from Okinawa and around the world. In November last year our

international cuisine workshop was very popular and everyone enjoyed making sushi, Indian and

English food. Fortunately not all together! This time Okinawa City are pleased to announce that

we will be organizing two special programs for you which will allow you to learn more about this

city and give you the opportunity to meet Okinawan people who understand English and would

like to make friends with you and teach you more about Okinawa. If you are interested and have

time on July 10th and 17th please come along.

Workshop 1

Explore Okinawa City - Saturday 10th July

This tour will introduce you to two interesting places in Okinawa City where you will be shown

how black sugar is made and also how Okinawan Awamori (sake) is made. Afterwards we will

then go shopping in Ichibangai and show you some of the stores where you can buy Okinawan

food and other items at reasonable prices. Finally we will round off the day with a party where

you will be able to try out the food that was bought whilst shopping.

The workshop will start at 1:00 pm and run until 3:00 pm.

Workshop 2

Introduction to Ireland

This will be an afternoon of fun learning more about Ireland, the food and famous Irish

Beer such as Guiness will be served and a traditional pub lunch will be provided. There will be a

performance of Irish songs, dancing and a live dinner theater.

The festivities will be held in the new Irish Pub, The Morrigan's, on Avenue Street (BCC Street)

and this will lend to creating a truly Irish atmosphere. The fun will start at 1:00 pm and run until

3:00 pm or a little later!

If you would like to find out more about the workshops and sign up for them please call Lisa at

Okinawa City Hall 939-1212 Ext 2421. There are only 20 places available so please apply soon to

avoid disappointment.
