Fitness TipDate Posted: 1999-06-05 I have started working with weights and I would like to know how many sets and reps I need to perform. The amount of sets and reps will depend on your purpose. Since you are just starting out I would suggest you consider a circuit of all the muscle groups, one set of 10 repetitions each. Another beginner’s workout would be the standard three sets of ten repetitions, approximately two to three exercises per muscle group. To keep from over-training your muscles, you may want to alter the days that you exercise certain muscles. Keep in mind that the three sets of ten is not a “carved in stone” workout. It is, however, a good place to start. Once you get into better shape you need to overload your muscles with compound sets, super sets and exhaustion sets. Remember it is your body make your choices wisely. If you have any questions you can e-mail me at creativeimages1@yahoo.com. Kenny from Nago asks: I want to become an aerobic instructor or a personal trainer, but I have seen a lot of out-of-shape looking instructors. Should I get in shape first? More important, Kenny, you have to ask yourself how do you want to appear to those you are trying to help. Do you want to deal with a lot of people and can you be sympathetic to the clients fitness needs? It is important that you look the part. You cannot gauge how in shape someone is by the way they look. I am a slim person and will always be slim. You couldn’t determine whether I’m in or out of shape. But my goal is to become about 15 pounds (about 7 kilos) bigger (preferable in my gluteus although it doesn’t work that way). It is a slow process to gain and to lose weight. What I have to offer you is a continuous wealth of knowledgeable information. Remember it is your body make your choices wisely.
