Police arrest dive shop owner

Date Posted: 1999-06-05

Police arrested the owner of a Chatan dive shop Sunday, after it was found he had consistently jeopardized the safety of customers by failing to comply with safety standards.

Toshiharu Takahashi, 36, owner of the Diamond Head Divers dive shop in Miyagi, Chatan, was taken into custody Sunday by Okinawa City police after it was found he failed to order safety inspections on air tanks used by customers, contravening legal obligations to have the tanks checked.

Police said Takahashi continually allowed divers to use equipment that had not passed safety checks, often forging safety inspection tags. Takahashi also avoided seeking permission from prefectural authorities for the supply of high-pressure air to the tanks. Inspection of individual tanks costs ¥10,000.

Police officers confiscated 22 air tanks. The suspect admitted his guilt.
