G-8 Summit dates setDate Posted: 1999-06-05 Nonaka, who also heads the Okinawa Development Agency, said the official announcement for what is being formally called the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit would come at this month’s G-8 summit meeting in Cologne, Germany. While meetings between G-8 foreign ministers and finance ministers will be held at Miyazaki and Fukuoka, Nonaka said the central government has yet to decide where each meeting will be held. Okinawa was named co-host of the 2000 summit in April. On June 8, a prefectural conference to discuss the summit will be formally established. Japan’s southern-most prefecture successfully fended off other prefectures lobbying for the right to host the annual meeting of the world’s leading industrialized nations, in what reports indicate was a “reward” by Prime Minister Obuchi for the suffering Okinawa endured during the Battle of Okinawa and long-standing concerns over U.S. military installations on the island. The 2000 summit will mark the first time it has been held outside the capital. |
