Naha homeless 12th highest in nation

Date Posted: 1999-06-05

The number of homeless people in the Okinawan capital is 65, the 12th highest for the nation, research undertaken by Naha City shows.

The number of homeless people in Japan stands at 16,247, with the largest number being those found in Osaka, with 8,660, a conference held in Tokyo to discuss the plight of homeless and displaced persons reveals.

According to the Welfare Ministry, the nationwide survey was inconclusive as it was conducted throughout the year, and as the number of homeless appears to increase or decrease depending on the season, findings from each prefecture were difficult to compare.

Disappointed with the results, the Naha City Office plans to look further into the homeless problem.
