Juvenile delinquency on the rise

Date Posted: 1999-05-29

The number of juveniles who have received warnings by prefectural police is on the increase, statistics released by the Protection and Safe Living Division of the Okinawa Prefectural Police show.

The number of juveniles involved in indiscretions as of April this year totaled 9,036, a rise of more than 2,323 for the same period last year, and the second highest figure for the entire Kyushu region.

Statistics reveal police cautioned 3,932 minors for roaming the streets near midnight and issued cautions to 2,671 juveniles for smoking cigarettes. High school students were the worst offenders, receiving the greatest number of police cautions.

Prefectural Police created the special division for measuring youth delinquency in April this year in order to increase the number of patrols. Division officers said if they cannot eliminate delinquency, they would have little chance of stopping a surge in crimes committed by minors.
