Prefectural governors meet in Tokyo to discuss G-8 summit

Date Posted: 1999-05-29

Governors from Fukuoka, Miyazaki and Okinawa met in Tokyo Monday in what is the first in a proposed series of meetings to discuss the roles their prefectures will play as major venues for the G-8 summit next year.

The Governor of Fukuoka, Wataru Asou, Governor Hirotaka Matsukata of Miyazaki, and Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine held discussions about establishing a liaison office between the three prefectures, and the importance of cooperating with each another in the lead-up to the summit. They also agreed the summit would provide much-needed exposure for their prefectures, which in turn would show the central government they have the necessary leadership qualities to deal with issues on a national level.
