Encephalitis warning

Date Posted: 1999-05-22

An announcement Monday has called for people to be aware of the risks of contracting encephalitis, and have released preventative measures to lower the risk of catching the potentially fatal disease. To prevent Japanese encephalitis, the announcement said, stay away from exhaust emissions, use mosquito repellent and try to source where mosquitoes are located.

From May to August each year, blood samples are taken from pigs, a source of encephalitis, and when the findings exceed standards, a warning is issued. Only one person contracted encephalitis last year. People who contract the disease usually have some ill effects, and in 18 percent of cases, the disease is fatal.
