Reef Check 99 begins with dive off HenokoDate Posted: 1999-05-22 Reef Check is a coordinated worldwide research effort into the condition of reefs at 258 sites in 30 different countries. The Henoko dive, conducted by local researchers, was the first for the year. During the dive, researchers checked the condition of the reefs, the type of reef, and the ratio of good, healthy reefs against those in poor condition. What they found, however, was disturbing, stating that the condition of the reefs were poor. This prompted both the researchers and environmentalists to agree that a greater effort is needed to protect local reefs off Henoko. Research results will be announced on the Internet. |
