"Dancing Caravan" to be held at USO

Date Posted: 1999-05-22

Ancient dance comes from life, and from our need to express ourselves and make sense of our existence. Dance is an important part of religious rituals, and in some societies today it remains an integral part of life and the culture.

Dance had a central role to play in ancient rituals, and eventually grew to embody the value systems of cultures which shaped it. Mystic tribal acts of early communities gave way to organize religious ceremonies, the most important of which were concerned with fertility of the earth and the human race. And so, the art of "Raks Sharki" or belly dance, as you know it, was born. On Saturday, June 5 at the USO, be ready to embrace re-enactments of some ritual dances. The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are currently on sale at the USO. Adult admission is $8 and $5 for children 10 and under. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
