US Ambassador, Consul General receive invites to International Karate Tournament

Date Posted: 1999-05-22

The U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Thomas Folly, and U.S. Consul General in Okinawa Robert Luke have received invitations to the Okinawan Traditional Karate World Tournament to be held in Okinawa in August this year. The Mayor of Naha City, Yasuharu Oyadomari and Yasushi Agarie, chief of the Okinawa Karate Association, visited Consul General Luke Tuesday where the invitations were offered to both diplomats.

Oyadomari said the main purpose of the Okinawa tournament was to give karate a greater worldwide exposure, and as the prefecture is the birthplace of the demanding sport, it was appropriate to hold it here. Consul General Luke said the US Ambassador to Japan is a big fan of karate and had taken up the sport.

The 1st Okinawan Traditional Karate World Tournament will be held from August 13 - 17 at the Prefectural Martial Hall in Naha City.
