The Kubasaki High School Parent Center was officially opened on March 22, 1999. Dr. Georgia Williams-Scaife, Department of Defense Education Activity, Chief; Col. M.B. Hogan, Camp S.D. Butler, Deputy Commander; Dr. Nancy Bressel, DoDDS-Pacific, Area Superintendent; Dr. Steve Bloom, Okinawa District, Superintendent; Mr. Tim Kilkenny, Kubasaki High School, Principal; Ms. Caroline Lufkin, Kubasaki High School, Student Council President; Mrs. Kathy Kelly, PTSA President; Mrs. Lillian Alacron, PTSA Treasurer, and other representatives from the student body participated in the Parent Center opening ceremony. Ninth grade students Ashley Wierzbick and Perri Lattimore gave short speeches on the Parent Center as a Service Learning Project. Audrea Bailey, Jenny Dries, Nick Lee, Briana Miller, Shelly Moore, and Kirsten Pellaton shared Power Point presentations on the Parent Center, as a part of their Service Learning Project. The Parent Center is a place for parents at school. All parents are welcome, encouraged and expected to visit and use this special facility. The center is equipped with resources and equipment designed to assist parents in promoting the social, emotional and educational growth of their sons and daughters. A computer, available for parents' use, includes Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Micro Power Point and the EXPAN Program. EXPAN is a computerized college admissions, financial aid and interest inventory. The EXPAN Program contains valuable information on nearly every college or university in the United States. A set of four modules (booklets) entitled Families and Schools Together (FAST) is available for checkout or use in the Parent Center. The FAST modules include valuable tips, techniques, and strategies that are designed to assist parents in supporting the education process. Additional videotapes, books and other resource materials will be purchased for the center in the future. The Parent Center may be used by parents for meeting, support groups or simply to read or relax. Seminars and other programs and activities of interest to parents will be scheduled at the center. The Parent Center is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and will open in the evening and on weekends, upon request.
