Urasoe Couple arrested after year-long theft spree

Date Posted: 2003-05-17

Urasoe Police arrested a local man and his common-law wife for allegedly committing a series of burglaries targeting parked cars. The burglaries took place between Feb. 2002 and Mar. 2003.

Police say the couple broke into cars and took anything of value. Investigators estimate that the total value of goods and cash taken amounts to ¥5.7 million. The burglaries took place in 13 different locations on Okinawa’s main island.

Police say that the couple was able to continue undetected for so long because they acted as a family. They had their two small children with them as they approached a car they had targeted, usually late at night. They then let their children to play around while they broke into the car, loaded everything onto a baby carriage and walked away. Most people who happened to pass by had the impression of a family on its way back from a family outing.

Investigators have so far uncovered 87 cases of stolen cash money, 63 cases of stolen car audio equipment, and 63 cases of other property that the couple took.
