Biggest NGO Meeting of the Century

Approximately 400 representatives from more than 50 Japanese NGOs are presently taking part in the Hague Conference for Peace 1999, held in the Dutch city until Saturday May 15.

Former Okinawa Governor Masahide Ota and Diet member Takako Doi are among several high-profile Japanese speakers at the conference, the biggest in history, which also includes United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Jody Williams. The conference is a major initiative aimed at establishing a Peace and Justice agenda for the 21st century.
