National treasure on show

Date Posted: 1999-05-08

One of Japan's living national treasures, famed bingata dyer Yuusei Tamanaha is exhibiting his work at the Okinawa Times Hall. Tamanaha received the title of living national treasure in 1996 through his work in bingata dying. Bingata dying is the practice of dying designs on only side of the cloth, and for Tamanaha many of his designs feature creatures from the wild. Tamanaha has received many awards for his work, which includes the use of mostly natural products. The exhibition runs through to May 13, and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 50 products, including kimono, obi and noren (shop curtains), are on display.
