Organ Donation Cards offered to US military

Date Posted: 1999-05-08

The Japan Organ Transplant Network offered Thursday the US military 20,000 Organ Donation Cards to distribute to its members in the hope others can be saved.

Director of the Japan Transplanted Organ Transplant Network, Tatsuro Mori, visited the president of the US Marine hospital in Kuwae, Chatan, Brian Brunman, Friday to ask if 20,000 Organ Donation Cards could be distributed on bases throughout Japan. The network started supplying English-language cards to military servicemen and their families in Japan in February.

The move comes after the family of a young American girl declared brain dead gave permission for an Aomori prefectural hospital to consider transplanting the girl's organs to those in need. But as the girl, a daughter of an American serviceman, did not have an Organ Donation Card, the offer could not be accepted.

This case prompted members of the Japan Organ Transplant Network to begin supplying English-language donation cards to members of the US military in Japan.

Brunman has promised to support Network by distributing the cards among the military.
