Japanese Navy training shop runs aground off Iriomote

Date Posted: 2003-05-17

A Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force training ship with 40 crew onboard ran aground shortly after it pulled out of the harbor in Iriomote Island on Sunday. The ship was taking part in exercise maneuvers at the time.

According to a MSDF spokesman, the ship was only 300 meters from the port when it hit the reef. The accident occurred during low tide and the ship got stuck on the reef for 12 hours before it was able to free itself during the high tide.

The Maritime Safety Agency (Coast Guard) dispatched a patrol boat from near-by Ishigaki Island to investigate the cause of the accident. MSA officials said there was no oil leak or other environmental damage to the reef. MSDF officials said that no one was injured in the accident.
