Japanese Navy training shop runs aground off IriomoteDate Posted: 2003-05-17 According to a MSDF spokesman, the ship was only 300 meters from the port when it hit the reef. The accident occurred during low tide and the ship got stuck on the reef for 12 hours before it was able to free itself during the high tide. The Maritime Safety Agency (Coast Guard) dispatched a patrol boat from near-by Ishigaki Island to investigate the cause of the accident. MSA officials said there was no oil leak or other environmental damage to the reef. MSDF officials said that no one was injured in the accident. |
