Hungarian wins Miyako Triathlon

Date Posted: 1999-05-01

A total of 1,444 triathletes braved hot and humid weather in the running of the 15th All Japan Triathlon in Miyako Island, Sunday. Despite the oppressive conditions, Hungarian Peter Kropko could manage a big smile after crossing the finish line ahead of a strong field in his first appearance at the Miyako event. In the women's section, a five-year absence did little to dampen Tokyo's Noriko Yamakura who won the women's race for a third time.

The event started from Maehama Beach in Shimoji Town, and wound its way around the beautiful islands of Miyako, Kuruma and Ikema ending up at Hirara City Athletic Park.

Sixty-six professional athletes from 18 countries and regions competed, with a total number of 1,444 participating in the event. More than 1,360 athletes (94.45%) managed to finish the grueling race. In spite of the hot weather, hundreds of spectators gathered along the course, cheering their favorites and the international contingent.
