Meteorologists expect rainy season to begin late this year

Date Posted: 2003-05-17

A stagnant high pressure system hovering over Okinawa appears to be the cause of an exceptionally late start to this year’s rainy season. Normally, the rainy season in Okinawa begins between May 8 and 11. Last year it started on May 11, but now officials at the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory say it will not begin before May 18 at earliest, and may not start before close to the end of the month.

The system is expected to linger a bit more, with cloud cover expected to increase after May 20, while temperatures remain higher than normal. The total rainfall of the rainy season is also expected to be considerably less than average.

That’s bad news for those minding reservoirs and dams in the prefecture. During the Golden Week the water level stood at less than 70 percent of capacity, and there has been no significant rainfall since. All signs are that prefecture’s shamans and rainmakers are facing another busy year.
