Body of missing Marine recovered

Date Posted: 1999-05-01

The body of a missing US Marine has been recovered from the wreckage of the CH-53E helicopter that went down April 19 in the Pacific Ocean east of Okinawa's Northern Training Area. Three other crew members perished in the accident.

The body was transported to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lester, where the crewman was positively identified as Sgt. Obdulio R. Munoz III, 32, of Los Angeles. Sgt. Munoz is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The wreckage was initially located by the mine sweeper USS Patriot Sunday morning, nearly two kilometers from shore in about 60 meters of water. Rough seas hampered efforts of divers to reach the wreckage and make a positive identification of the aircraft until Tuesday. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
