Cattle prices remain low in response to disease fears

Date Posted: 2002-01-17

Fears of mad cow disease have depressed prices in several cattle auctions around Okinawa Prefecture. At the year’s first auction held Sunday on Yaeyama’s Kuroshima, the average price of a calf remained low at ¥180,000, down more than ¥100,000 from the same auction last year. Prices were higher the next day at the prefecture’s largest cattle auction on Ishigaki Island, averaging ¥240,000 per calf. Although this was ¥110,000 less than last year, it showed a ¥35,000 increase over prices paid in December, which saw the lowest figures to date as a result of news of increased incidences of mad cow disease in Japan.
