April in Okinawa is a month many islanders always welcome - a time when we embrace the re-opening of a number of beaches, and the many events that celebrate the arrival of the swimming season on Okinawa. And if you've ever pictured yourself floating among pink coral with brilliant blue and yellow fish swimming around you, or splashing through the water on a jet-ski, now is the time to stop wondering and just get out and do it!

One of the first events on the summer calendar comes from the Naha Marina, which bids everyone a warm welcome to its annual season-opener, the Marina Carnival, to be held Saturday, April 24. The event is being held as a sign of the season's arrival and everyone is welcome to enjoy great food, fabulous music and a great selection of water sports.

The carnival consists of two parts, dubbed not surprisingly Part 1 and 2. Part 1 begins at noon and runs through to 5 p.m., and includes family-oriented entertainment you know the whole family will enjoy. During Part 1, diving and jet-ski try-outs are provided, with basic information and skills required for first-timers provided by the instructors. So don't hesitate, take part! Although safety equipment is provided, you must bring your own shower utensils, such as a towel and shampoo. If you plan to try a little diving, you must be at least 135 centimeters in height.

From 1p.m. to 4 p.m., the swimming pool will be opened and a kids' swim suit contest will be held poolside at 3 p.m. If your children wish to enter the contest, just wait for the announcer to call for participants - and don't miss out!

A cruise to nearby coral sites is also scheduled, with departure times of 2, 3, and 4 p.m. Don't forget to put your name down on the sign-up sheet an hour before departure.

Another major plus for the carnival is the great assortment of food and drinks that will be available. Sandwiches, a BBQ, fruit drinks and food served buffet style are just some of the great choices. Beer drinkers can also avail of the amber fluid for ・300.

For those who enjoy staying dry when having fun, you're going to love Part 2, which runs from 6 p.m. until 10. First kick back and listen to that great jazz band, "South Wind," who'll entertain you with cool melodies from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and if sunset cruises on the East China Sea brings out the romantic in you, get ready to hop onboard at either 7, 8, or 9 p.m. (Don't forget! Put your name down at least an hour before departure time.)

The event is hosted by Masumi Rodriguez, a popular DJ of the long-time Okinawan radio program called "Popn' roll Station."

Tickets prices, which include the entertainment, food and a cruise, for Part 1 are ・2000 for adults, ・1000 for children under the age of 10; Part 2 will cost ・2500. Tickets can be purchased now from Naha Marina or at the door.

Directions: Take Route 58 and head for Naha. When you reach the Aja intersection make a right. Go straight until you reach the sixth set of traffic lights, then make another right. Naha Marina will be on your left.
