Miyako fishermen and divers continue to feud

Date Posted: 1999-01-01

The Miyako Island Divers’ Association issued a statement, Sunday, demanding that the local fishermen’s union stop disturbing their activities. They also requested the Maritime Safety Agency Hirara Office to ensure that members of the Miyako fishermen’s union do not interfere in the diving activities in the seas around the island. There has been trouble between members of the Fishermen’s Union and the Divers Association since July,

1996. Last December, the Fishermen’s Union sued six Diving Enterprises in Miyako but the fishermen lost their case. The court ruled that the Fishermen’s Union has no right to interfere in divers’ activities any more.

The Diving Association insists that the Fishermen’s Union is still trying to prevent their members from diving and they want the MSA to order the Fishermen’s Union to stop their tactics.
