Japan protests Indian missile test

Date Posted: 1999-04-16

Japan lodged an official complaint over a missile test conducted Sunday by India, stating that it could "damage regional peace and stability," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiromu Nonaka told a news conference.

"We hope the test firing this time will not intensify tension between India and Pakistan and strongly urged both countries to exert self-restraint on missile tests," he said.

The Agni missile, with a range of 2,200 kilometers, was launched from an island off the eastern Indian coast. News reports say the missile is capable of carrying nuclear warheads as far as China.
